Metafilter’s 10th
July 19, 2009I have mixed feeling about this party. Things turned out very good, but there was a lot that wasn’t accomplished, and many things that were rushed. Regardless, things came together quite nicely. Here is the room, in the beginning:

Tom (stickycarpet) adjusts a light. On the right, the LED videowall. Sadly, it was unable to be used.

The space has scant few objects in it in this time.
In the beginning, because of the flat walls and spaciousness of the room, the ambient reverberations made it nearly impossible to hear anything said, even between two people. The solution to this was fiberglass covered in cotton and decorative fabric which absorbed the soundwaves and cut the echo. The space was soon completely filled with mad-scientist stuff.

The videowall is set up on the left, and the first batch of acoustic dampeners is hanging on the right. Note the horror movie wall panels in the center. Only one was used.
Over time, even more objects filled the room. Finally, the party happened and somehow everything was in place. I credit Chris (vraktar), who apparently is some sort of a party-wizard and waved his hands around and magically there was an awesome party.

People from the internet...they exist!

jonmc was at the party. He gave a toast (pictured).

This vague blurry picture is a rare depiction of offline metafilter. The mind boggles.

This is what the party looked like to many a mefite.
One aspect I was particularly happy with was the “cafe” area near the door:

This picture was taken near the end of the party, sometime around 3 am

Multicolored lights gently cycled colors below translucent glass table. The effect is difficult to depict in still images.

The lights danced on the cotton baffles.
And the aftermath:

The blue velvet cupcakes turned my poop blue-green. This is all the remains of the delicious food contributions.

At the end of the night...

The contents of the ashtray at the end of the night.

Finally, I left.
Hot damn!
